Biography

Mary Robinson: Climate Justice and Global Leadership

Mary Robinson became the first woman elected President of Ireland in 1990. She served as the country’s seventh president until 1997, helping to reshape the role through her focus on inclusion, equality and Ireland’s relationship with communities around the world.

Following her presidency, she was appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. From 1997 to 2002, she worked to place international human rights more firmly at the centre of the United Nations agenda.

This combination of political leadership, legal expertise and personal conviction gives her keynote presentations unusual depth. President Robinson speaks as a former head of state who has witnessed how global decisions affect individuals and communities, particularly those with the least power or influence.

From Trinity College Dublin to the World Stage

Before becoming the first female President of Ireland, Mary Robinson built a distinguished career in law, academia and public service.

She studied law at Trinity College Dublin before attending Harvard Law School, where she completed a Master of Laws degree in 1968. At the age of 25, she became Reid Professor of Criminal Law at Trinity College Dublin, where she also taught constitutional law.

Mary Robinson represented the University of Dublin constituency in the Irish Senate from 1969 to 1989. In 1988, she and her husband, Nicholas Robinson, founded the Irish Centre for European Law.

She later served as Chancellor of the University of Dublin from 1998 to 2019. She remains closely connected to Trinity College and is currently Adjunct Professor of Climate Justice at Trinity College Dublin. She has also previously served as Professor of Practice at Columbia University.

Her academic and legal experience allows her to explain complex questions around leadership, policy and corporate responsibility in a way that is clear, relevant and accessible.
